Variation of cork porosity along the stem in harvested cork oak (Quercus suber L.) trees

چکیده

Cork porosity, due to lenticular channels, varied along the stem of Quercus suber L. Lenticular channels’ area, rather than their number, decreased upwards stem. Area decrease was observed regardless tree size and its intrinsic porosity. The cork is radially crossed by defining cork’s natural It has been suggested that porosity decreases from base upwards, but studies on such variation have not yet presented. Three main research questions were addressed: (i) how large stem; (ii) does relate with traits, namely number channels (iii) much vary height between trees. We set up a study at level quantify samples fixed heights. Our statistical modelling approach based linear mixed-effects models, given nested structure data. In model fitting, described as function height, while random effects explained source variability introduced different (as diameter breast Dbh) CPbh). area consistently proportion in tissue (i.e. coefficient) about 1.4% per metre stem, findings highlight traits greatly among trees, more within-tree, which may be an important clue predict variations properties, for decision-making oak management.

Phylogeographical variation of chloroplast DNA in cork oak (Quercus suber).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS In the last decades, the geographical location of the centre of origin of Quercus suber (cork oak), a strictly western Mediterranean oak species, has been the subject of controversy. METHODS RFLP variation over the whole chloroplast DNA molecule and PCR-RFLPs over seven specific cpDNA fragments were analysed phylogeographically to reconstruct the evolutionary history of co...

Factors aVecting post-Wre crown regeneration in cork oak (Quercus suber L.) trees

Cork oak (Quercus suber) forests are acknowledged for their biodiversity and economic (mainly cork production) values. WildWres are one of the main threats contributing to cork oak decline in the Mediterranean Basin, and one major question that managers face after Wre in cork oak stands is whether the burned trees should be coppiced or not. This decision can be based on the degree of expected c...

Deciphering cork formation in Quercus suber

The family of Fagaceae, comprises about 900 species, among them the best-known group of this family is the oaks, genus Quercus, that are commonly used as timber or for cork production. Cork is produced by Q. suber, an evergreen oak with major economic and environmental importance for Mediterranean region, in particular for Portugal that is the leading producer of this material. Besides, the eco...

Effects of cadmium on cork oak (Quercus suber L.) plants grown in hydroponics.

Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) is an autochthonous tree species that is being used for reforestation in heavy-metal-contaminated areas in Spain. A hydroponics experiment was carried out to characterize the effects of Cd on several morphological and physiological parameters in this species, including shoot length, nutrient concentrations and allocation in different organs, leaf pigment concentratio...

Diurnal changes in photoprotective mechanisms in leaves of cork oak (Quercus suber) during summer.

Daily variations in photoprotective mechanisms were studied in sun and shade leaves of 40-year-old cork oak (Quercus suber L.) trees during early summer in Portugal. Although trees were not severely water stressed because predawn leaf water potentials remained high, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance decreased at midday. The midday depression in gas exchange was not reversed by short-term ...
